Shingles is contagious,\u00a0so it can spread from person to person. The older you get, the more you&#8217;re at risk for Shingles.\u00a0It is most common in people over the age of 50.\u00a0Shingles can be painful and can cause serious problems. For most people, the pain from the Shingles rash lessens as it heals. However, for some people, Shingles may lead to pain that lasts for months or even years. This long-term nerve pain, called postherpetic neuralgia or PHN, occurs because the virus that causes Shingles may\u00a0cause damage to\u00a0nerves.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-custom-color-1-color has-text-color\"><strong>Symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-custom-color-1-color has-text-color\">The first signs of Shingles are often felt but may not be seen. These can include itching, tingling, and burning. A few days later a rash of fluid-filled blisters appears almost always on one side of the body or face. The blisters take 2 to 4 weeks to heal. Rarely, people&nbsp;may suffer from long-term nerve damage and will feel very harsh pain. For&nbsp;those who do, even the touch of clothing against skin can be painful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-custom-color-1-color has-text-color\"><strong>Prevention<br><\/strong>There is an injection to help prevent shingles. It is recommended for patients over the age of 60, but is only 50% effective. It can help prevent shingles for up to 4 years. There are some side effects to the injection such as site irritation and headaches.
