Shingles

What is Shingles?

If you’ve had chickenpox, then you are at risk of developing Shingles. Shingles is contagious, so it can spread from person to person. The older you get, the more you’re at risk for Shingles. It is most common in people over the age of 50. Shingles can be painful and can cause serious problems. For most people, the pain from the Shingles rash lessens as it heals. However, for some people, Shingles may lead to pain that lasts for months or even years. This long-term nerve pain, called postherpetic neuralgia or PHN, occurs because the virus that causes Shingles may cause damage to nerves.

Symptoms

The first signs of Shingles are often felt but may not be seen. These can include itching, tingling, and burning. A few days later a rash of fluid-filled blisters appears almost always on one side of the body or face. The blisters take 2 to 4 weeks to heal. Rarely, people may suffer from long-term nerve damage and will feel very harsh pain. For those who do, even the touch of clothing against skin can be painful.

Prevention
There is an injection to help prevent shingles. It is recommended for patients over the age of 60, but is only 50% effective. It can help prevent shingles for up to 4 years. There are some side effects to the injection such as site irritation and headaches. Ask your physician if this right for you.
